Je T’aime No. VIII (Mallarmé’s Swan: Homage), 1957
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991)
Oil on linen, 42 x 40 inches
Delaware Art Museum, F. V. du Pont Acquisition Fund and partial gift of the Dedalus Foundation, 1998

This painting is one in a series begun in 1955, distinguished by the inclusion of the French words “je t’aime” (“I love you”) on the surface of the paintings. The image of a white swan’s wing in the center of the canvas makes reference to the evocative writings of a French Symbolist poet, Stéphane Mallarmé, whose work the artist admired.
