Jamey Grimes: Aster

Nov 12, 2025  -  Dec 31, 2027

Free with admission
Location: Fusco Hall

Through his manipulation of synthetic materials, Jamey Grimes constructs sculptures that engage the viewer in an exploration of form and space. This site-specific installation for DelArt’s Catherine A. Fusco Hall is part of the artist’s ongoing Aster series. Reminiscent of natural forms and phenomena, like cellular tissue, cirrus clouds, or a starling murmuration, Aster fills the space with sweeping energy. For Grimes, the desire to create is “fueled by encounters with nature and playful experimentation with synthetic materials.” His skillful handling of corrugated plastic leads to the turbulent form that appears to swirl above us.

Jamey Grimes is Assistant Professor of Art, Sculpture, and Museum Studies at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Grimes holds dual undergraduate degrees in painting and biology from Birmingham-Southern College and a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Alabama. He also works with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project at Auburn University. Grimes’ work has been included in numerous solo and group projects in venues throughout the United States including the Gadsden Museum of Art, Bo Bartlett Center at Columbus State University, 701 Center for Contemporary Art, LSU Museum of Art, and Southeastern Louisiana University Contemporary Art Gallery. Permanent installations of Grimes’ work are on view in the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, among other public and corporate spaces. Grimes is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including a 2019 South Arts State Fellowship, 2015 Druid Art Awards Educator of the Year, and fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
