Citizen Photographer
This winter, DelArt launched Citizen Photographer, a statewide initiative inviting community members to engage in civic reflection and contribute to shaping public perceptions of identity through photography. Inspired by federally funded initiatives of the past, Citizen Photographer provides a platform for Delaware residents to consider and visually capture what it means to be a Delawarean as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Through workshops, exhibitions, and an open call for submissions, Citizen Photographer encourages civic storytelling and creative participation across the state.
Workshops
DelArt partnered with three community organizations—Teen Warehouse, Lewes Public Library, and the Smyrna Opera House—to host free photography workshops. The workshops were led by three accomplished photographers whose work is represented in the Delaware Art Museum’s collection: Morris Brown II, B. Proud, and Andre’ Wright, Jr.
These workshops are designed to strengthen participants’ technical and creative skills while exploring the project’s central theme. Whether preparing work for submission to the statewide Citizen Photographer competition or simply refining their artistic practice, participants engaged in guided instruction, dialogue, and hands-on exploration.

Citizen Photographer Installation in the Citizen Artist Exhibition
All Delawareans—regardless of workshop attendance—were invited to submit up to two photographs for consideration for exhibition through Citizen Photographer. Congratulations to these 24 photographers whose work was selected for the juried exhibition featured in DelArt’s Citizen Artist exhibition (April 11–July 19, 2026).
