DelArt Celebrates Family and Pride

The Delaware Art Museum has a wonderful habit of creating cultural experiences within this small state, and has done so over the last decade. The Powwow of Arts and Culture celebrates our Iindigenous communities. The Hip Hop Summit aims to educate and recognize the many ways Hip Hop has shaped our world. Día De los Muertos honoring the ancestors through art, music, and food. As well as so many more.

As an outsider looking in, attending these events has always been a joy because I knew these things to be true; I was going to eat, I was going to learn something, and I was going to feel welcome. That last being the most important, if you can’t feel seen and safe, why go?

Now, as an employee, I get to witness all that goes into curating these programs for the community to not only enjoy but feel proud of. I see the research, the community outreach, and the work around effective collaboration within the communities we intend to uplift. Stories are being told through authentic lenses, resulting in inclusive and affirming cultural experiences at the Museum.

I was hired to continue that work and tasked with figuring out what I was going to add to the lineup.

Family Pride Day enters the chat!

When I began planning the Family Pride Day, I recognized the importance of creating an inclusive and experiential space through collaboration. I saw a clear need to approach it in this manner to better support and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, particularly queer families, by inviting my key collaborators to the table. Orgullo De, Delaware Queer History, PFlag and PTK. All of these organizations have demonstrated a love and dedication to building community, and I wanted to join in on the bridge building!

On Saturday, June 21st from 11am to 4pm, we are hosting the very first Family Pride Day at the Delaware Art Museum! This event will celebrate love, identity, and community at this joyful event for LGBTQ+ families and allies! Enjoy a day filled with creativity, connection, and self-expression through artmaking, music, story time, an open mic, and more. Explore our galleries, meet local LGBTQ+ orgs, and enjoy brunch and cocktails in a welcoming space for all.

Special Guests Carolanne Deal of Delaware Queer History and Jackson Salasky, President of PFLAG’s Wilmington/Northern Delaware Chapter and Noah Duckett of Orgullo De will be joining the festivities for the day along with several other surprise guests and organizations!

Put this event on your calendar today to make a difference tomorrow!
