Maya Belardo, known as “The Princess of Jazz,” in her hometown of Wilmington, DE is passionate about jazz and maintaining this beloved art form. She fell in love with jazz around the age of 12 when she heard a recording of Nat King Cole singing, “Nature Boy.” She was inspired by his voice and discovered many jazz legends who have paved the way for her to sing this music today. Maya has been fortunate to sing in her hometown and many of the surrounding states for almost a decade. Recently, she was invited to sing for four months internationally during her residency at the prestigious “Bamboo Bar” the oldest jazz lounge in Bangkok, Thailand this past spring. Maya is the recipient of the 2024 Individual Artist Fellowship Award from Delaware Division of the Arts. The award has given her the freedom to create her own unique sound for her upcoming EP with all original music. The highly anticipated single, “Better Days,” is slated to be released this September. The new music will be a pleasant surprise to her fans and is sure to captivate new listeners.

Eo Omwake‘s work, Taming of the Ox, is currently on view in Paintings from the Collection. Omwake graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1968 and began exhibiting throughout the Northeast immediately upon graduation. He has taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and is a regular and much-loved teacher at the Delaware Art Museum. Join the artist and curator Margaret Winslow in gallery 9 at 6 pm to discuss his painting practice.
