When an indian woman (Sarita Choudhury) falls for a black man (Denzel Washington) in Mississippi, the power of love is tested as both family’s prejudicies of each other’s ethnicities attempt to pull them apart.
Mira Nair’s layered portrayal of love and race still feels unparrelleled over three decades later.
Mississippi Masala is Nair’s second feature. She went on to be the first Indian woman to win Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion Award (for 2001’s Monsoon Wedding).
