Inspired by images and stories from Imprinted: Illustrating Race, the Orientation Gallery will feature Journey to Freedom, a mural by Philadelphia-based artist Cindy Lozito. Her project explores self-determination and considers the role of constellations and the landscape for enslaved people navigating routes to freedom.
Cindy Lozito is a muralist, illustrator, and cartoonist based in Philadelphia. Originally from Queens, New York, she is the daughter of Puerto Rican and Italian parents. Her work is rooted in drawing and painting, which she explores through scales as small as comics to as massive as building-wide murals. The themes that most often appear in her work are how we form our sense of identity, the power of imagination and play from childhood into adulthood, processing familial loss through story preservation, and creating spaces that make our surroundings more joyful and colorful than how we first found them. She considers every project an opportunity to use visual storytelling as a bridge of belonging for both the artist and the audience. Some of her clients include Abrams Books, New York Times, Philadelphia Museum of Art, World Trade Center, LA Times, and more.
