Trip Highlights

The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, newly renovated and recently reopened, is home to the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom and is housed in an architectural gem designed by Louis Kahn. Spanning five centuries of painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, and rare books, the collection is what prompted Sophie Lynford to pursue her PhD in British Art at Yale. The museum offers the opportunity to situate the Pre-Raphaelites we know and love in Delaware within the wider context of nineteenth-century Victorian art. Our visit will serve as a historical counterpoint to the contemporary and American-focused collections we’ll explore after leaving New Haven.

The Norman Rockwell Museum celebrates the iconic American illustrator whose depictions of everyday life capture a timeless sense of nostalgia. The museum holds the world’s largest collection of his original works, along with rotating exhibitions that explore illustration and storytelling in American culture.

The Clark Art Institute offers a world-class collection of European and American art assembled by Sterling and Francine Clark in the first half of the twentieth century. Blockbuster painting after blockbuster painting line the walls of this gorgeously sited and architecturally designed museum, set against beautifully landscaped grounds with mountain views.

The Williams College Museum of Art adds a dynamic, academic energy to the region’s art scene. Located on the campus of Williams College, the museum is known for its hard-hitting exhibitions that span centuries and cultures, from antiquity to the present day. The institution is also at the forefront of museum education, with creative and pioneering student-curated shows, as Williams College is home to the country’s most prestigious master’s program in Art History.

MASS MoCA is housed in a sprawling converted factory complex. It’s one of the largest centers for contemporary art in the country, known for immersive installations, bold exhibitions, and thought-provoking performances.

A trip to the Berkshires combines art, nature, and small-town charm in a way that feels both relaxing and inspiring.
