Gallery Learning Assistant

The Delaware Art Museum seeks a Gallery Learning Assistant to join the Art & Learning Department. This role is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing gallery-based public programs and interpretive content that deepen visitor engagement with the Museum’s exhibitions and collections.

Working collaboratively across departments, the Gallery Learning Assistant will design inclusive and enriching experiences for diverse audiences in alignment with DelArt’s educational goals. Reporting to the Manager of Learning and Interpretation, this position is part of the Education team, which also includes the School and Tour Coordinator, Art Bridges Fellow, and an annual cohort of 5–6 contracted Museum Educators.

This is a part-time grant funded position ($17/hour; 25 hours/week) through 2029.

For more than a century, the Delaware Art Museum has been a cornerstone of artistic and cultural life in the region. Founded in 1912 to honor illustrator and Wilmington native Howard Pyle, the Museum now houses more than 13,000 works of art, including American illustration, British Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces—the most comprehensive collection outside the U.K.—and a growing portfolio of contemporary art.

Key Responsibilities

Adult Content Development & Facilitation (40%)

  • Collaborate with Museum Educators to design curricula and learning materials for adult tours (guided and self-guided).
  • Partner with the Manager of Learning and Interpretation and the Membership Coordinator to develop content (e.g., a bi-monthly newsletter) and support promotion of DelArt’s Adult Learning Community.

K–12 Content Development & Facilitation (40%)

  • Collaborate with Museum Educators to design curricula and learning materials for K–12 tours (guided and self-guided).
  • Develop gallery-based youth programs connected to the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Gallery Program Coordination (20%)

  • Partner with the Manager of Learning and Interpretation to develop and implement gallery-based programs focused on DelArt’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, such as guest lectures, gallery talks, drop-in activities, and artist-led experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Curatorial team to align programs with exhibition content and interpretive goals.
  • Foster inclusive, welcoming, and accessible environments in gallery spaces.
  • Work with the Marketing team to promote programs.
  • Schedule and plan programs in a timely manner, following internal procedures, and manage related materials and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, including attendance and evaluation data.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in museum education, gallery facilitation, or public programming.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, education, museum studies, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with best practices in gallery teaching, accessibility, and inclusive program design.
  • Knowledge of state Common Core Learning Standards for Visual Arts.
  • Experience working with multilingual or intergenerational audiences.
  • Familiarity with the Altru registration system and database.
