William Glackens Illustration Collection

A Philadelphia native, William Glackens (1870–1938) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts while working as a newspaper illustrator before moving to New York, where he became known for his lively depictions of city life, leisure, and the beach. As a member of “The Eight,” he took part in their landmark 1908 exhibition at Macbeth Gallery and later assisted Albert Barnes in building his renowned collection of modern art. Glackens also played key roles in the 1913 Armory Show and the founding of the Society of Independent Artists.

The William Glackens Illustration Collection, donated by Ira Glackens in 1989, includes tear sheets and proofs of the artist’s magazine illustrations, along with research materials for William Glackens: A Catalogue of His Book and Magazine Illustrations by Nancy E. Allyn and Elizabeth H. Hawkes (Wilmington: Delaware Art Museum, 1987).
