The Delaware Art Museum expands its programming with weekly film screenings starting in 2025

DelArt Cinema will offer the community a place to watch and discuss important films from around the world.

Starting this January, the Delaware Art Museum will expand its commitment to learning, engagement, and visitors’ experience by bringing the diverse world of film to the Museum community. The DelArt Cinema screenings will be held every Saturday at 1:30pm with the last Saturday of the month being a free member screening. The second Sunday of each month at 1:30pm will be a screening for families. There will be a snack stand, courtesy of Kaffeina Cafe, as well as a bar with beer and wine for sale. Both offerings will be set up downstairs, right outside of DelArt’s 160-seat auditorium where the screenings will take place.

“Just as film itself is diverse, so is the community;” Tom Cavanaugh, DelArt Cinema’s Film Curator said. “We want fans of all filmmakers and genres to find screenings that excite them.”

The first curated program will complement DelArt’s Jazz Age Illustration exhibition and will feature Singin’ in the Rain, The Roaring Twenties, Some Like it Hot, and The Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu). The kids’ screening in January will be The Iron Giant.

February’s series, Love in the 90s, will celebrate Black History Month with four powerful films from the 90s. Starting the month with Spike Lee’s Crooklyn, followed by the original House Party, a Valentine’s weekend screening of Love Jones, and ending the month with Love & Basketball. The kids’ screening in February will be Good Burger.

DelArt Cinema will introduce curated programs highlighting films and filmmakers from across the globe. Upcoming programs will dive deeper into specific directors’ filmographies, different genres, geographical locations, and important moments in the history of film. Giving locals a place to connect with other film lovers and helping cultivate a new syndicate of cinephiles.

“As the community comes out to films that excite them, maybe they’ll also come out to some that intrigue them,” Tom said. “Hopefully we can introduce people to filmmakers they weren’t familiar with, and they can descend even deeper into their love of movies. Who knows, maybe a film inspires them to create one themselves?”
