DelArt Sails South Friendraiser Offers Sneak Peek of Jazz Age Illustration Exhibition
The Delaware Art Museum, the state’s largest art museum, located in Wilmington, will offer a sneak peek of its highly anticipated upcoming exhibition, “Jazz Age Illustration,” as part of a friendraiser at the Lewes Yacht Club, 2701 Cedar St., Lewes. The DelArt Sails South event, which includes food and beverage, a silent auction and live music, takes place on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $75.
Barbara Goetz, Museum trustee and chair of the event, who lives in Lewes said, “DelArt is doing really engaging exhibitions and programs for all Delawareans. Beginning with this event, we are excited to meet people interested in learning more about the educational and cultural opportunities the Museum can offer to Sussex County residents and visitors. Join us and help to paint the picture.”
“Jazz Age Illustration“ is the first major exhibition to survey the art of popular illustration in the United States between 1919 and 1942, drawing from DelArt’s extraordinary illustration collection and loans from museums, libraries and private collectors. Delaware illustrators feature prominently in the exhibition.
In addition to the preview, the Museum will share plans for bus trips from Sussex County to the Museum and hosting programs in southern Delaware. The Museum is committed to partnering with the many existing organizations that are already deeply rooted in Sussex.
Executive Director Molly Giordano says, “Everyone deserves access to great art and art museums, and it’s important that we imagine together how the Delaware Art Museum can serve Sussex County in the future. With major original exhibitions like ‘Jazz Age Illustration,’ we are excited to share rich arts offerings with everyone in the First State. I look forward to bringing this preview to Lewes as part of the kickoff to our ‘Year of the Illustrator.’ It’s a great stepping-off point as we write the next chapter for expanded art access for all Delawareans.”
Tickets must be purchased in advance at delart.org/delartsailssouth. Proceeds benefit future Museum programs and events in Sussex County.

About the Delaware Art Museum
For over 100 years, the Museum has served as a primary arts and cultural institution in Delaware. It is alive with experiences, discoveries and activities to connect people with art and with each other. Originally created in 1912 to honor the renowned illustrator and Wilmington-native, Howard Pyle, the Museum’s collection has grown to over 12,000 works of art in our building and sculpture garden. Also recognized for British Pre-Raphaelite art, the Museum is home to the most comprehensive Pre-Raphaelite collection on display outside of the United Kingdom, and a growing collection of significant contemporary art.
Under the leadership of our Board of Trustees, the Delaware Art Museum is implementing a comprehensive approach to community and civic engagement. This exciting new strategic direction requires that we increase our value and relevance to all audiences.
