A Day of Reflection, Creativity, and Action
The Delaware Art Museum will host a MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 20th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, connecting people for a day inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy of service, community, and social change.
This free community-focused event will feature engaging activities, reflection, performances, and opportunities for collective action. The event will also feature a keynote address by Ali Shah Watson, Delaware’s representative for the 2024-25 cohort of the National Leaders of Color Fellowship program and Executive Director of Culture Restoration Project, Inc.
The event will celebrate creativity and community through powerful artistic experiences. Attendees will enjoy performances by the Wilmington Children’s Chorus and an electrifying drumline and dance showcase by the Christina Cultural Arts Center. Wilmington-based artist 7God will lead a hands-on collaborative art activity, inviting participants to engage directly in the creative process. A symbolic time capsule presentation will encourage attendees to share their hopes and reflections, capturing the collective spirit of the community. Additionally, guided tours of the “Jazz Age Illustration” exhibition will provide an inspiring exploration of artistic expression from the Jazz Age, adding a historical and cultural dimension to the day.
Emphasizing the importance of community support and care DelArt is organizing a non-profit fair, and free produce distribution. Donations of supplies like pencils, glue sticks, backpacks, and tissues will be collected before and during the event and distributed to schools in the Brandywine and Red Clay School Districts. Delaware Urban Greens be on-site with free produce for attendees. Additionally, a variety of nonprofit organizations will be on-site sharing details about their programs, upcoming events, and opportunities for involvement.
Light refreshments, including some generously provided by Wawa, will be available while supplies last, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.
Admission is free. Registration is required for this event that promises to be a meaningful celebration of Dr. King’s values, bringing the community together to reflect on the past and take action toward a brighter future.
This program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
