The Language of Leaves: Transcendental Monotypes & Journal Making

Presented to complement the exhibition Transcendent: Landscapes of the Hudson River School, this two-day intensive workshop is inspired by the Transcendentalists’ deep attention to the natural world. Participants will use plants, ink, and paper in new, creative ways while learning to view nature as both studio and subject—as a source of artistic inspiration and a catalyst for reflective journaling.

Day 1 – Using local flora—leaves, ferns, and flowers— and paying close attention to their unique textures and forms, we will experiment with the expressive art of monotype printmaking on the museum’s large Charles Brand etching press.

Day 2 – The finished prints will become the raw material for three different journal designs that students can easily replicate at home. No prior printmaking or bookbinding experience is required. All materials are provided, but students are encouraged to bring gathered flora from their own neighborhood walks.
